Golden Isles Provisional Sail & Power Squadron inducts first "full member" of
newly launched squadron
October 25, 2003 -- The Golden Isles Sail & Power Squadron inducted its first
"full member" (Member joining this provisional squadron without primary ties to
the sponsoring or other squadrons) on October 25th in its first
formal meeting in the Golden Isles area. Attending the meeting were many
officers from the sponsoring Savannah River Sail and Power Squadron in Augusta
and some other officers from Atlanta and even Canada who are part of the
provisional membership. This means they can remain full members in other
squadrons while still lending support to our local efforts. When the Golden
Isles have 25 or more qualified members and becomes a full squadron, these
provisional members will move their membership here, moving from provisional to
full local membership.
Having been inducted as the first full member of the squadron, Karl Peters said
"The Golden Isles are long overdue for such a group!" Peters first took the
course in 1973 as a teenager in Rock Hill, S.C.'s Catawba Squadron of District
27. He feels that the class, and participation in a squadron of the USPS
in the Carolinas was instrumental in his comfort level on the water. USPS
classes like these are designed to raise the general level of water safety
consciousness and preparedness for anyone from the novice to the navigator. Many
advanced courses are offered for those who complete any of the membership
qualifying courses and join the squadron. These classes range from engine
maintenance to sail and from seamanship to navigation.
